What this quote means is to just basically do the right thing. Like if you are told to do something that you know is wrong , you don't do it because you know what's good to do and you know what is bad. If people see you doing the right things they will follow you for that because to them you are leading. For example, if you're out at a party and you see teens drinking you tell then to stop drinking before they all get caught. That's doing the right thing because you're saving yourself and them also from going home drunk and getting caught. So basically just choose to do the right things, people will follow you and if not then that's on them as long as you do the correct things.
